Fun Facts: Nationality Confusion Series
If you’ve read my “You are Turkish, aren't you?” story, well, what I’m about to share will sound familiar.
This Moondigenous being apparently carries the face the world. Either the name, the features, or maybe the confusing accent — probably shaped by living abroad in international bubbles for the past 7 years. Whatever it is, just few people guess my nationality at first.
🌍 In Europe, many think I’m Italian, Latina (Colombia is favourite), or Turkish.
🇹🇷 In Turkey, EVERYONE is 100% sure I'm Turkish. (Same goes for Greece).
🇺🇿 In Uzbekistan, I was told I looked like I came from the western part of the country.
🇵🇭 In the Philippines, I was told I “could pass” as Filipina.
🇮🇩 In Indonesia, they said I looked like I was from a specific region — and after I learned a song in Indonesian, they even complimented my pronunciation.
🇹🇭 In Thailand, for some reason, everyone thought I was Israeli.
🇻🇳 In Vietnam, it was either Israel or Thailand again.
🇮🇳 India – So many thought I was Indian, some were shocked I wasn’t!
Fun story: I once went for a massage, and the lady started speaking to me in Hindi. I just smiled blankly. She paused, surprised, and asked, “No Hindi?... oh,” then switched to English. I thought maybe she didn’t speak English — but no, she just assumed I was Indian. Again.
🇯🇵 In Japan, I’ve heard: "Maybe you were Japanese in a past life."
Worth mentioning — as a kid and teenager, I was asked multiple times if I had Asian family, or specifically Japanese. While most people get confused by that (since my big eyes are kinda obvious), some still think I might have Asian ancestors.
✨And yes, there are more nationalities I’ve been attributed — but these are the ones that come up the most.
Someone recently told me, “you have a generic exotic look.”
😅 Maybe that’s why I’m so hard to guess.
What about you? Has any of you been part of their own nationality confusion series?
